They work all the time but still struggle to put food on the table. Patrick and his sister take care of each other. Patrick likes to play with cars and dogs. His favorite color is blue.
Christian Ramírez (12/5/2005) Christian and his sister live with their parents in a one-room shack. His father is a street vendor and the family struggles to make ends meet. Christian loves to run and play—he's very fast. P.E. is his favorite activity in school, but the streets are too dangerous to play in. Christian is always looking out for his friends.
Carlos Zepeda (11/13/2005) Carlos and his brother live with their parents and grandparents. The small house is crowded, and both boys sleep on cardboard laid on the dirt floor. His father works in a factory and his mother is a secretary. Carlos has problems with constipation. His parent can't afford a specialist. His favorite color is green and his favorite animals are dogs. Carlos' fondest memory was of a trip to the beach.

Jefferson López (8/15/2005s) Jefferson is an only child. He lives with his mother and grandparents. His mother works all day, so Jefferson helps with chores and does the wash. Jefferson's best friend is his uncle. He likes the color red and chickens. His fondest memory is of a trip to the zoo. He wants to grow up to be a doctor.
Erika Sánchez (12/24/2006) Erika is an only child and lives with her mother and grandparents. Her mother works all day as a seamstress. Erika gets lonely without her. Erika's favorite color is green and her favorite animals are little dogs. She enjoys helping her mom cook. Erika has excellent communication skills. She wants to be a teacher.

His father is gone and his mother works all day as a shopkeeper. A few months ago, Kevin got the flu and a cough, and he's still weak. His favorite color is blue and he loves horses. His fondest memory is of a visit to the swimming pool. Kevin wants to be a pilot.
